Shawn Gillum was admitted to the Colorado State Bar in 2004 and practiced law in the Denver-metro area for more than 10 years before moving to West Michigan. He joined Visser and Associates, PLLC, in August 2019.
Shawn began his legal career as a prosecutor in Jefferson County, Colorado, where he served as a Deputy District Attorney for the First Judicial District. Later, Shawn went into private practice and successfully represented clients facing complex legal matters in a variety of settings, including jury trials, appeals, and administrative litigation and hearings before the State Board of Pharmacy, the State Board of Education, and the Department of Revenue. He also served as General Counsel to the largest public online charter school in Colorado. Shawn presented a landmark case before the Colorado Supreme Court and has been featured on behalf of clients in The Denver Post, FOX 31 Denver, the Denver Business Journal, Outside Magazine and Rocky Mountain News. Shawn was named to the Colorado Super Lawyer Rising Star list in 2013 for excellence in the practice of law.
Shawn earned his bachelor’s degree from Colorado State University, where he graduated cum laude and was named co-Most Outstanding Journalism Graduate. He earned his Juris Doctor from the University of Denver Sturm College of Law. Shawn’s law school honors include winning national and regional moot court competitions as a member of the University of Denver Trial Team, earning the American Jurisprudence Award as Top Student in Advanced Legal Analysis, and being nominated as the Most Outstanding Graduate of his law school class. Shawn served as the Editor for the Transportation Law Journal and was selected as a Teaching Assistant for the law school’s Academic Achievement Program.
